The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added one new REACH substance to the REACH SVHC Candidate List on July 17th, 2017. Additionally, the ECHA modified the information of one chemical already on the list.
Specifically, the newly added substance to the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list is Perfluorohexane-1-sulphonic acid and its salts (PFHxS). Its CAS number is 355-46-4.
Thus, adding this chemical brought the REACH SVHC list to 174 substances.
Potential health and environmental hazards of PFHxS include the following:
Also, PFHxS is very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) and therefore is detrimental to the environment long after it is released.
PFHxS is found as an impurity or a replacement of PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, which is a per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substance – PFAS) and used in:

In addition to including PFHxS in the SVHC candidate list, the ECHA modified the entry for the pre-existing substance 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol. Commonly, we refer to it as Bisphenol A (BPA). Its CAS number is 80-05-7.
To specify, the modification was the inclusion of BPA’s endocrine-disrupting properties to its list of potential hazards.
Endocrine disruptors such as BPA cause several harmful effects on the human body, including:
The following are also potential health and environmental hazards of BPA:
BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic and polymeric coatings (epoxy resins).
Among other applications, manufacturers generally use Bisphenol A (BPA) in the following products:
