The Responsible Minerals initiative has released the latest version of the Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT). Here is now the CMRT 6.1 version, following the previous 6.01 one.

What is a CMRT?

CMRT means Conflict Minerals Reporting Template. The non-profit RMI organization (Responsible Minerals Initiative) manages this standard. The intent is to help companies comply with regulations like the American Dodd-Frank regulation, the European Regulation # 2017/821.

These regulations currently target four minerals: Tin, Tantalum, Tungsten, and Gold. They are commonly called 3TGs.

Why Conflict Minerals Regulations?

A lot of products and businesses depend on the supply of 3TGs. Think about the electronic industry with tin in solder, gold in printed circuit boards, of tantalum in capacitors.

Efficient recycling of waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), to collect as many precious metals as possible, plays an important role. Smelters, refiners, and mines as well.

This rising demand tends to pressure markets and bring geopolitical concerns. Indeed, some precious mines, especially in the region of Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), are under the control of armed rebel terrorists. Sadly, such terrorists exploit local populations with modern slavery and various abuses.

Conflict minerals regulations aim at hindering the supply of conflict minerals from non-safe mines. As a result, smelters play an essential role in this endeavor. They are audited to determine the origin of the ore they process.
